Game Interface Design

The creation of a game's interface–which includes the title screen and dialog boxes, among other things, is accomplished through the Interface Window. To access the Interface Window, click the Interface button on the tool bar, or select Interface from the Window menu.

This window contains tabs for editing the main menu, dialog boxes, game icon, intro cut screen, sound effects, and additional properties. The purpose of each tab is summarized below:

Main Menu Design

The Main Menu tab contains controls for designing the appearance and button layout of the menu screen that appears when the game starts up. This menu has buttons for beginning a new game, continuing a saved game, accessing the preferences window, viewing the credits, and quitting the game.

Dialog Box Editing

The Dialog Boxes tab is used to change the contents of some of the game's dialog boxes, including the Credits dialog box and the Cheat dialog box.

Game Icon Editing

The Game Icon tab is used to add the icon that appears on finished game applications.

Intro Cut Screen Editing

The Intro Cut Screen tab is used to edit the cut screen that appears after the Begin New Game Button is clicked but before the first level begins.

Interface Sound Effect Editing

The Sound Collections tab contains controls for selecting certain sounds that are played throughout the game, for example the startup music, the pause game sound, and the camera shutter sound, which is heard when the player takes a screen shot of a game in progress.

Specifying Additional Properties

The Additional Properties tab contains a set of controls for editing numerical properties that control several aspects of the game, including the game's scrolling, gamma fading, and the volume of certain sound effects. Here the game's default preferences can also be determined.
